Booker Prize-longlisted novelist Chloe Aridjis (The Shadow of the Object) plays a fictionalized version of herself in Josh Appignanesi’s gritty, shot-on-video thriller, a dreamlike tale of desire heavily informed by the work of surrealist painter and writer Leonora Carrington. The character of Chloe is the co-curator of a new Carrington exhibit at the Tate Liverpool and becomes increasingly disillusioned about the scene she’s found herself in. She begins to notice a strange and mysterious man and embarks on something of a cat-and-mouse game of erotic fixation and psychological spiral. Wildly underseen and underappreciated, Female Human Animal rejects categorization and clarity for a more transgressive and true expression of our inner desires. -Becca Rieckmann
