In honor of the 250th anniversary of French-American relations, we are thrilled to partner with Villa Albertine for their free outdoor screening series Films on the Green, celebrating cultural exchange and cinematic collaboration between the two countries on the silver screen. Join us on the West Lawn of Hollyhock House for an evening of great cinema, music and food.
Legendary French director Jacques Demy’s sole English-language studio film is an outsider’s attempt to define Los Angeles as a city on screen, featuring beautiful photography of the city’s Westside and capturing everyday life in L.A. as a place of drifting, melancholy, and possibility. A slacker architect (Gary Lockwood) is about to lose his girlfriend and his car, until he sees a beautiful model (Anouk Aimée) and begins to follow her, from Malibu Beach to Beverly Hills mansions to Santa Monica Boulevard’s strip malls. One of the key 1960s films about L.A. and a forerunner of the New Hollywood youth culture, Demy’s film pays a dreamlike reverence to the city’s landscape, and endures as a relaxed and poignant vision of the sprawling city. In English.
Special thanks to Villa Albertine, Barnsdall Art Foundation and Hollyhock House.
“Critically underrated and neglected… A portrait of everyday life Los Angeles in 1969 that seems remarkably accurate and authentic.” -Jonathan Rosenbaum
“If you live [in L.A.], you have to be moved.” -Thom Andersen
